Below are a list of unlockable in-game options. With the exception of "Hard Mode" (which is unlocked by beating the game on at least Normal Mode), all others are unlocked by simply beating the game. Now, you can safely move any unit, flying or not, over the spaces without having them fall into a hole. But remember that a ground unit cannot pass pitfalls that have already been activated, so this can only work with non-activated pitfalls. Note: Enemy units do not fall into pitfalls, and they will block off normal spaces right next to pitfalls.
